How
can I get an outside line in my office phone system?
This is the obvious thing to want if you use the internet from your office.
Run Control Panel/Modems, hit Dialing Properties, and check out
the "To access an outside line" boxes. Type in the appropriate keys
you'd normally press on your phone's keypad into these boxes. Insert
a comma after this code to insert a five second pause. For example,
"9," dials nine then waits five seconds before dialing the outside
number. Remember that "," because you need to let your phone system
switch to an outside line before you start dialing. The "," is typically
a five second pause but this may vary depending on the modem type.
If you have a unique code for dialing long distance in your office,
you can put it in there, but don't include the standard "1" because TAPI
does this already. All modem applications will use this rule
as soon as you OK it.

Why
is my computer dialing long distance when I know it's a local number?
As of the last quarter of 2001, all customers are required to dial all 10
digits of the telephone number.
Maybe
you have the "Dial area code" or "Dial as a long distance number"
switch turned off for that connection or number. Check with the app's
manual for setting this switch. Even if you're dialing a local number,
make sure you turn on this switch. You might've used a different
area code in your dialing location than in the number you're dialing.
Check to see that the area codes match. This is the only way that
Windows knows how to distinguish a local call from a long distance
one.
Citizens Telephone Customers, please see page 3 of your phone directory
for your local calling areas!
It is the CUSTOMERS responsibility to determine
whether the number you are calling is local for your area!
Citizens Internet will NOT be responsible for toll calls made to connect
to the internet.
To
confirm the number you are dialing, follow these steps:
- Double
click on the My Computer icon.
- Double
click on the Dial Up Networking Icon.
- Right click
on the Citizens Internet icon.
- Left click
on Properties at the bottom of the menu.
- Compare
the telephone number with the local access numbers on the
information card that accompianied your software.
- Click in
the box next to the line, "Use area code and country code" to make your
modem dial all 10 digits.
Note
to Windows 98 users: There will be a box next to "Use area
code and dialing properties". Click in that box to enable this
feature.

How
can I turn off the annoying call waiting beep that cuts me off?
To
turn off call waiting for the duration of this call, bring up your
dialing properties and turn on "This location has Call Waiting,
to disable it dial..." and type the string needed to disable call
waiting. The drop-down list gives many variations of "*70" to choose
from. Most tone-dial systems use *70, and most pulse dial systems
will use 1170.

I
log on but can't go anywhere?
Try typing the IP (208.31.214.16), if the browser loads Citizen's home
page then the URL.DLL file needs to be reinstalled. Delete it and
reinstall Dial-Up Networking.
If
the IP doesn't work either than it is most likely a connection problem.
Make sure there is only one TCP/IP in the control panel.

It sometimes takes up 1-2 minutes to logon to the Internet. What
can I do about this?
Incorrect configuration
of Dial-Up Networking is the common culprit of slowed logons. Sometimes
Windows sets up a default connection that tries to negotiate a number
of things you don't normally use on the Internet.
To correct this
configuration, follow these steps:
- Double left-click
My Computer.
- Double left-click
Dial-Up Networking.
- Single right-click
Citizens Internet.
- Single left-click
on Properties.
- Click on
the Server Types tab, or button.
- Under Advanced
Options, check only Enable Software Compression.
- Under allowed
Network Protocols, check only TCP/IP.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
- Close Dial-Up
Networking and My Computer and try your connection again.
